Jayeshbhai Jordaar is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film written and directed by Divyang Thakkar, and produced by Aditya Chopra and Maneesh Sharma under Yash Raj Films. The film stars Ranveer Singh in the titular role as the son of a traditional Gujarati sarpanch, who believes in equal rights between males and females in society. The film was announced on 27 May 2019, to be directed by Divyang Thakkar, produced by Yash Raj Films, and starring Ranveer Singh as the titular Gujarati man. Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak were cast as Singh’s parents while South actress Shalini Pandey was paired opposite him. The film was initially scheduled to hit theatrical screens on 2 October 2020 coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, and then on 27 August 2021 and 25 February 2022.
Jayesh lives with his pregnant wife Mudra and daughter Siddhi after birth of Siddhi Mudra has had several abortions as she did not bear a male child. Jayesh finds from the doctor that due to several abortions Mudra wont be able to bear a child after her current pregnancy. Finally they decide to travel to village of Amar Tau who is against abortions and supports female births as his village has no surviving females.
Jayeshbhai Jordaar received mixed to negative reviews from critics, criticising film’s slow pace, story, screenplay & direction. As of 17 May 2022, the film grossed ₹17.80 crore in India and overseas, for a worldwide gross collection of ₹23.03 crore. Reviewer from News 18 rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote it was “unsucessful but also poignant”. Reviewer Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV rated it 2.4 out of 4 stars and said the film left you feeling “unfulfilled”. Reviewer Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated it a “babble of characters flailing about in a plot which makes you grit teeth”.
